Getting Rid of Fleas on Kitten

By: Jens Peter Jensen

Kittens are very young cats, and they are still very fragile. So when their fine hairs get attacked by fleas, perhaps the first reaction that we can get from their owners is panic. But there is really no need to worry, for there are ways on how we could safely get rid of the fleas on our pet kittens.

For Kittens Six Weeks and Below

When the kitten is just below six weeks in terms of age, the main problem is that they are still too young to undertake strong medication that is often used for the treatment for fleas. So the trick here is to employ a kind of flea treatment that is both effective as it is safe and gentle to very young kittens. Here are some tips on how to deal with it.

First thing that we should do is to make sure that the kitten is clean and freshly bathed, its fur soaped with a mild dishwashing detergent and rinsed with lukewarm water. While bathing, we can pick the fleas that we can see on the kitten's fur. To guide us through, we could also use a comb to make things easier, but make sure the teeth are blunt and they do not scratch. Try to do this for as long as the weather conditions are not too cold so as to discourage prolonged exposure to the water. After bathing, make sure to dry the kitten with a clean towel, which should always be washed thoroughly after with hot water and a strong detergent to kill the fleas that will be caught.

While drying the kitten, run through its fur with a comb that is especially designed to trap fleas in between its teeth. Do this regularly until all the fleas are killed.

For Kittens Above Six Weeks

Kittens that are older than six weeks of age are now fit and strong enough to be able to withstand strong medications for the destruction of fleas in their system. Fortunately, these days, it is much easier to choose flea medications for kittens since most already have labels on them as per the safety precautions and what age could use them. Most kitten owners prefer the Advantage brand of flea medications, since they are so effective in as much as that they start to take effect only upon an hour of application. When used properly, they will completely get rid of all the fleas in the kitten in as fast as two hours only.
